Hard To Follow 비록 쉽지는 않지만 …

One of the great fallacies of discipleship is that once you become a follower of Jesus, life gets easier. That’s just not true. Nowhere in the Bible are we promised that following Christ makes life easier. In fact, the Bible indicates that the exact opposite is true. Just consider what Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14… Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide, and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

제자도에 대한 큰 오해 중 하나가 예수님을 따르면 인생이 쉬워 진다는 것이다. 이는 진실이 아니다. 성경 어디에도 그런 약속은 없다. 오히려 성경은 그 반대라고 한다. 마태복음 7:13-14절만 봐도 그렇다. “좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고 14생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 이가 적음이니라.”

From this passage, there are two important truths we learn about following Jesus. First, We learn that FOLLOWING IS NOT EASY. Jesus said, “The gate is narrow, and the way is hard that leads to life” (emphasis added). The way to destruction is easy, but the way to life is difficult. I think that’s why on multiple occasions, Jesus indicated that following Him would require one to “take up his cross” (Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; cf. Matthew 10:38).

이 구절이 가르쳐 주는 두 가지의 중요한 진리가 있다. 첫째, 예수님을 따르는 것은 쉽지 않다.  “명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하”다고 하시지 않았는가? 반면에, 멸망으로 가는 길은 쉽다. 어쩌면 이것이 예수님께서 당신을 따르는 것을 “십자가를 지”는 것이라고 여러 곳에서 말씀하신 이유다 (마태복음 16:24; 마가복음 8:34; 누가복음 9:23; 마태복음 10:38).  

The phrase “take up his cross” is a reference to “the Roman practice of forcing a condemned criminal to carry his own cross-beam to the site of the crucifixion.” Therefore, it was originally associated with martyrdom. However, “when martyrdom ceased to be common, cross-bearing properly became of symbol of following Jesus in sacrificial service.” Thus, the admonition to take up a cross can refer to any “burden that [a disciple] must bear” and “any sacrifice [one] must make to be faithful to the Lord.”

“십자가를 지”라는 말은 사형수들에게 자신이 처형될 십자가를 처형장까지 스스로 지고 가게 한 로마법을 연상케 한다. 즉 이것은 순교와 관련된다. 하지만, 순교가 더 이상 흔한 일이 아닌 때가 되었을 때, 십자가를 진다는 말이 예수님을 희생적으로 따르는 것을 의미하게 되었다. 그래서, 십자가를 지라는 말씀은 제자가 져야할 짐 그리고 주님께 충실한 제자가 반드시 치러야할 희생을 의미하는 것이 되었다.  

Ultimately, what Jesus is saying when He says “take up your cross” must be understood in light of the fuller instruction to “deny [yourself], take up [your] cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23). When “take up your cross” is paired with the instruction to “deny self” and “follow,” what you have is a call to abandon your own, personal will (i.e. deny self), accept God’s will (i.e take up your cross), and put those two in practice (i.e. follow me). Thus, following is not easy because it requires one to do the hard work of rejecting self in order to accept God’s standards, God’s agenda, God’s purposes, and God’s will.

결국, “십자가를 지라”는 주님의 말씀은 “네 자신을 부인하고 네 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라”는 전체 속에서 더 깊이 이해할 수 있다 (마탭복음 16:24; 마가복음 8:34; 누가복음 9:23).  “너 자신을 부인하고”와 “따르라”와 합하여 보면 “십자가를 지라”는 우리 자신을 버리고, 우리의 뜻을 버리고, 즉 너의 십자가를 지고, 그리고 이 두 가지를 행하라는 것이다. 그래서, 따른다는 것은 쉽지 않다. 왜냐하면, 하나님의 기준, 계획, 목적, 그리고 뜻을 따르기 위해 자신의 그것들을 버려야 하기 때문이다.    

Second, we learn that FOLLOWING IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY. Jesus said that not only is “the gate…narrow and the way…hard that leads to life” but also “those who find it are few” (emphasis added). Many will enter the way to destruction, but few will find the way to life. Now, don’t misunderstand this text. Everyone is invited to follow. The way to life is accessible to everyone. But not everyone is going to choose it. Not everyone is going to choose to take “the way…that leads to life.”

둘째, 따르는것은모든사람이할수있는일이아니다. 예수님께서 말씀하셨듯이 “ 찾는 이가 적다.” 멸명으로 들어가는 사람은 많고 생명으로 들어가는 사람은 적다. 하지만 오해는 말자. 모든 사람에게 그 문은 열려 있다. 하지만 모든 사람이 그 문을 택하는 것은 아니다. 모든 사람이 생명으로 인도하는 문을 택하지는 않는다. 

This is best illustrated by that 5000+ member crowd that Jesus fed with a few pieces of bread and a couple of sardines. In John 6, we are informed that on the day after this miraculous feeding, the crowd searched for Jesus, and when they found Him, He began to feed them spiritually instead of physically. He informed them in John 6:35 that He is “the bread of life,” and He expounded on this identity over the course of the next 25 or so verses. In particular, He spoke about His death and alluded to the Lord’s Supper, which would commemorate His atoning sacrifice when He said in John 6:54, “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

오병이어의 기적이 이것을 잘 말해준다. 요한복음 6장은, 오병이어의 기적을 보고 예수님을 좇아온 많은 사람들에게 이번에는 예수님께서 영적인 양식을 주신다. 예수님은 당신이 “생명의 떡”임을 밝히시고 그 후 25개 절을 통해 그 의미를 설명해 주신다 (요한복음 6:35). 마침내 6장 54절에서 예수님은, “내 살을 먹고 내 피를 마시는 자는 영생을 가졌고 마지막 날에 내가 그를 다시 살리리”라고 말씀하신다.   

Now, look at John 6:60. After hearing Jesus present the Bread of Life discourse and talk about eating His flesh and drinking His blood, “many of his disciples…said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?’ and, according to verse 66, they “turned back and no longer walked with him.” In other words, some disciples found Jesus’ teaching too hard, so they chose not to follow anymore.

이제 요한복음 6장 60절을 보라. 예수님의 이 말씀을 들은 제자들이 “이 말씀은 어렵도다. 누가 들을 수 있으랴” 하고, 66절에 따르면, “제자 중에 많이 물러가고 다시 그와 함께 다니지 아니”했다. 

Do you think that still happens today? When people come across a hard teaching, do you think they give up on following? When people realize they have to give up a particular sin that they enjoy, do you think they give up on following? When people realize that following requires more than a spectator mentality, do you think they give up on following? When people realize the cost associated with following, do you think they give up on following? You see, following may be AVAILABLE TO everybody, but, ultimately, following is not going to be CHOSEN BY everybody.

오늘 날에도 이런 일이 일어날까? 그들이 받아들이기 힘든 가르침을 들었을 때 예수님을 따르는 것을 멈추는 일. 그들이 범하며 즐기는 죄를 떠나야 할 때, 예수님을 따르는 것을 그만두는 사람들이 있는가? 예수님을 따르는 것이 그냥 구경하는 것 이상이라는 것을 알았을 때, 예수님을 더 이상 따르기를 포기하는 사람들이 있는가? 예수님을 따르기 위해서는 값을 치러야 한다는 것을 알았을 때는? 보다시피, 예수님을 따르는 것은 누구에게나 열려 있지만, 모든 사람이 그것을 택하지는 않는다. 

We need to be honest about being a disciple of Jesus Christ. The Bible indicates that it will not be easy and it will not be for everyone. But the Bible also indicates that it will be worth it. Why? Because only those who choose to follow will receive “the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

우리는 예수님의 제자로 사는 것에 대해 정직할 필요가 있다. 성경은 예수님의 제자로 사는 것이 쉽다고 하지 않고 모든 사람이 제자가 될 것이라고도 하지 않는다. 하지만 성경은 예수님을 따르는 것에는 반드시 상이 있다고 한다. 왜 그럴까? 왜냐하면, 오직 예수님을 따르는 것을 택하는 사람들만이 “생명의 면류관”을 받을 것이기 때문이다 (요한계시록 2:10).
