Faith Beyond Failure

For humans, failure is unavoidable. Failure can come from human limits, mistakes, or even sin. It is the same for Christians. However, there is a big difference regarding failure between those with faith and those without. What makes the difference? It is not that failure happens because it happens to all people. The story of the apostle Peter, when he walked on water and failed in it later, gives an answer to this question (Matthew 14:25-32). 

실패하지 않는 사람은 없습니다. 인간으로서의 한계, 실수, 나아가서 죄로 인해 인간은 실패합니다. 이것은 크리스챤이라고 다르지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 믿는 사람과 믿지 않는 사람 사이에는 실패와 관련해서 큰 차이가 있습니다. 그 차이는 어디서 오는 것일까요? 실패한다는 사실이 그 원인이 아닌 것은 분명합니다. 왜냐하면 모든 사람이 실패를 하니까요. 사도 베드로가 물 위를 걷다가 잠시 후에 실패한 이야기는 이 질문에 한가지 답을 줍니다 (마태복음 14:25-32).

The story of Peter tells us that believers in Jesus should not fear failure, as if failure were the end of life. Instead, the story illustrates that believers have the grace of God at hand so that when the believer fails for any reason, he can ask God for deliverance, and He delivers him (Psalm 37:24). When we have failed, if we repent of our sins or shortfalls, He delivers us graciously “without reproach” (James 1:5).

베드로에 관한 그 이야기는 예수님을 믿는 사람들은, 한번 실패하면 인생이 끝날 것처럼, 실패를 두려워하지 말아야 한다는 것을 말해 줍니다. 대신에, 그 이야기는 믿는 사람은 언제든지 기댈 수 있는 하나님의 은혜 안에 있어서, 어떤 이유로든 실패를 했을 때 하나님께 구원을 구할 수 있고, 그러면 하나님께서는 그를 구원해 주신다는 것을 예시해 줍니다 (시편 37:24). 우리가 실패했을 때 우리의 죄, 부족함, 혹은 연약함을 고백하고 회개하면, 하나님은 우리를 “혼내지 않으시고” 자비롭게 구원해 주실 것입니다 (야고보서 1:5).

Therefore, just as Peter boldly jumped into the stormy sea in the dark, we can attempt many good things according to the will of God without fear of failure. This boldness comes from faith in God, who promises to deliver us when we ask Him for deliverance (cf. Psalm 50:15). This confidence empowers us beyond the human limit. It enlarges our territory beyond the ordinary territory people without faith have (cf. Hebrews 10:39). So, this faith beyond fear of failure makes us live an extraordinary life in God.

따라서, 베드로가 담대하게 폭풍우치는 어두운 밤바다에 뛰어들었듯이, 우리들도 실패를 두려워 하지 않고 하나님의 뜻에 맞는 많은 좋은 일들을 시도할 수 있습니다. 이 담대함은 하나님을 믿는 믿음에서 옵니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은, 우리를 구해달라고 부탁드릴 때 우리를 구해주신다고 약속하시기 때문입니다 (시편 50:15 참조). 이 믿음의 확신이 하나님을 믿는 우리를 인간의 한계를 넘는 힘을 줍니다. 또한 이 확신은 믿음이 없는 보통 사람들의 지경보다 하나님을 믿는 우리의 지경을 더 넓게 해 줍니다 (히브리서 10:39 참조). 그래서, 이 실패를 두려워하지 않는 믿음은 우리가 하나님 안에서 비범한 삶을 살게 합니다.
